FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index Up 2.3% In August, Up 8.8% Year-To-Date, Up 12.6% Over 12 Months

The exchanges sector is riding a wave which could demonstrate a steady recovery is underway in the financial markets. Year-to-date, share values of publicly listed exchanges have increased modestly, with an 8.8 per cent increase in the FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index.

The Index, which aims to reflect market sentiment and is a key indicator of the exchanges’ performance, saw a 2.3 per cent increase in August 2016.

Commenting on the Index which closed up at 37,198.35 on 31 August 2016, Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and Co-founder of the Index said:

“This has been a good month for the Index. Moscow Exchange has had a good run on the back of strong Q2 results with earnings growth being supported by an increase in fee and commission income from all trading markets. JSE has been hit, in part, by the political overhang of South African President Jacob Zuma appearing to be attempting to oust Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan”.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index best performer by capital returns in US dollars was Moscow Exchange with a 13.4 per cent increase in share price from 29 July to 31 August 2016. The next best performer was Japan Exchange Group with an 8.9 per cent increase over the same period.

The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index worst performer by capital returns in US dollars was South Africa’s JSE with a 13.5 per cent decrease in share price from 29 July to 31 August 2016. This was followed by Brazil’s BM&F Bovespa with a 6.2 per cent decrease over the same period.
