Canadian investment managers are turning to the global equity markets at an accelerating pace. A recent report from the Canadian Pension Fund (CPF) Investment Directory identified a 149% increase in global equity investment management mandates awarded in a 12 month period (autumn 2004 to autumn 2005). At the same time, Canadian investment mandates awarded declined by 61%. To effectively access and fully explore global investment opportunities, electronic trading and the FIX Protocol are becoming essential.
Interest in electronic trading and FIX is growing rapidly in Canada as leading investment professionals realise that electronic trading and FIX are key elements in achieving performance goals. They recognise that more advanced tools are needed to locate liquidity, facilitate best execution, and maximise trading efficiency. It is also becoming evident to market participants that they cannot be as competitive using traditional approaches for manual trading and settlement.
The conference is in response to the tremendous interest shown at last year’s FPL conference, for an ongoing event that will maintain momentum in the use of electronic trading and FIX in Canada. This conference is the event in Canada that helps the securities industry to maintain its competitive edge in a period of rapid market change involving global investment, new instruments, alternative trading approaches, and greater regulatory oversight.
This year’s conference will focus on recent electronic trading and FIX developments, and it will explain how these developments are being effectively employed both within Canada and on a global basis. The conference will provide users and potential users of electronic trading and FIX with the opportunity to collaborate, learn and strategise by joining industry colleagues to explore how electronic trading and FIX has dramatically changed the total trade lifecycle. This will be achieved by Canadian electronic trading leaders and FIX users sharing experiences and gaining insights from U.S. and international electronic trading and FIX leaders.
Commenting on the forthcoming event, Ross Hutcheon of UBS Investment Bank and Co-Chair of FPL's Global Education & Marketing Committee stated, “By embracing electronic trading opportunities and supporting industry-driven organisations like FPL, the Canadian securities industry will continue to be active participants in the global securities industry, and global industry initiatives need the perspective, knowledge and energy of Canadian securities professionals.”
Ross added, "I’m very pleased that use of electronic trading and FIX in Canada continues to grow, and that FPL is able to assist in maintaining this momentum. This support shows that the Canadian securities industry is dedicated to improving market efficiency.”
