Final Nasdaq Third Quarter 2000 Results - Daily Share Volume Averaged 1.58 Billion - Total Dollar Volume Exceeded $4.7 Trillion

The Nasdaq Composite® Index finished the third quarter of 2000 significantly higher than it did at the end of the same period one year ago, while trading activity continued to ascend. On September 29, the Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 3672.82, a gain of 33.74 percent from the end of the third quarter the year before. The Composite declined 7.39 percent, however, from the second quarter of this year and was 9.74 percent lower for the year.

Trading activity on The Nasdaq Stock Market® remained brisk in the third quarter, with share volume averaging 1.58 billion per day, a 56.90 percent increase over the same period last year. Nasdaq’s fifth heaviest trading session ever occurred in the third quarter, when volume soared to 2.16 billion shares on September 22.

The dollar value of shares traded on Nasdaq in the third quarter dramatically increased over the same period in 1999. Dollar volume in the third quarter totaled $ 4.73 trillion compared with $ 2.41 trillion last year, a gain of 96.40 percent.

Total market value at the end of the third quarter was $5.28 trillion, up 57.45 percent over the same period one year ago.
