A strong increase in cash trading was seen in February on Euronext markets: + 22,2% compared to the same month last year, in terms of total volume as well as on an average daily basis. In February 12.6 million transactions were made. In the year-to-date the total number of transactions amounted to 26.6 million, representing an average daily number of 648,400, up 20% compared to the same period in 2003. This is a record in the year-to-date since Euronext's creation.
Shares
Share transactions saw the most significant growth, 24% year-on-year, with 12 million transactions completed, 600,000 on a daily average basis. The 25.2 million transactions made in the year-to-date, representing an average daily volume of 616,400, show a progression of 21.5% compared to the same period last year.
Trackers
With a daily average volume of 1,250 transactions in trackers in February, the number of transactions registered year-to-date amounts to 56,650, down by 8% on the same period last year.
Derivatives products
Euronext.liffe, the international derivatives business of Euronext, traded over 72 million contracts in February 2004, an increase of 40% on February 2003, making it the busiest February on record and the second busiest month ever for Euronext.liffe. On average, 3.6 million contracts per day were traded.
While growth in trading volume was seen across the product range, the highest increase was registered by individual equity products which were up 83% on February last year. A total of 44 million equity products were traded: over 33 million of which were individual equity products and 11 million of which were equity index products.
Over 26 million short-term interest rate contracts traded during February 2004, an increase of 28% year-on year. Commodity products continued to grow, up 16% on February last year.
