European Climate Exchange Monthly Report & Exchange Monthly Volume - October 2008

Date 03/11/2008

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • ECX October volumes reached a total of 412 Mt, exceeding the previous monthly record from July 2008 (346 Mt) and representing a 283% increase over the same month last year.
  • Average daily volumes in EUA and CER futures and options averaged nearly 18 Mt (17,928 lots). Screen-traded EUA futures volumes continued to grow and reached a record of 5.6 Mt average daily. Total open interest in ECX products surpassed 500,000 contracts – equal to over half a billion tonnes of EUAs and CERs.
  • Like many markets, carbon experienced a volatile month in October, the benchmark Dec’08 EUA price dropping nearly 20% to settle at €17.94. The Dec’08 CER-EUA spread narrowed to €2.44; the one-click spread tool to trade this CER-EUA differential in the five December contract months was introduced on the ICE platform on 24th October.
  • The much-awaited connection between the CITL and ITL was successfully completed on 16th October. The link means CERs issued under the Clean Development Mechanism can be transferred into the national registries of the EU Member States.
  • ECX is proud to be Gold Sponsor of the Catlin Arctic Survey, a major scientific expedition to measure the thickness of the remaining permanent Arctic Ocean sea ice. The three month survey begins February 2009 and its findings will inform international decisionmakers in Copenhagen in December 2009. www.catlinarcticsurvey.com
