Equities And ETFs Trade Volumes Ease In October

Equity trading through Euronext NV's orderbooks totalled €137.9 billion in October 2001, down 8.7% from September. The year-on-year decline was 11.1%, from €155.19 billion in October 2001. In the first ten months, daily trading on Euronext averaged €6.68 billion, up 0.2% from €6.67 billion in the same period of 2000.

Total trades in equity products came to 96,733,185 over the first ten months, compared with 108,681,537 over the same period of 2000.

On NextTrack, the compartment dedicated to exchange-traded funds, trading eased from a daily average of €93.6 million in September to €91.5 million in October. ETF's trading totalled €2.1 billion in October, up 12.4% from September. NextTrack was launched on 9 January 2001 and now counts 35 tracker funds.

The Euronext 100 index rose 4.6% in October, while the Next 150 rose 8.4%. From the beginning of the year, the Euronext 100 fell 25.5% and the Next 150 28.6%.

Over the same period, Euronext's regulated markets welcomed 37 new listings. On October 31, capitalization of the 1,566 companies listed on Euronext N.V. totalled €1,872 billion.

Since 29 October 2001, Euronext's equity markets have used a single trading platform, creating the first pan-European electronic market.

Derivatives Trading up 61.9% on October 2000

On Euronext's derivatives markets, trading rose 61.9% from October 2000, with 45.77 million contracts changing hands. Trades in index options were up a steep 55.7%, while transactions in equity options rose 96%.

In the first ten months of the year, 329.7 million futures and option contracts were traded, or 18.4% more than the 278.4 million in the same period of 2000.

Euronext N.V., the first pan-European exchange, was created in September 2000 by the merger of the Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris exchanges. Euronext N.V. has itself been listed on Euronext since July 6, 2001.
