In February 2013, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) listed in the Canada had net inflows of $907 million US dollars, according to new research published in the latest ETFGI Canada ETF and ETP industry insights. ETFGI won the Best ETF Research award in 2012 in the ETF Express awards announced on February 28th in London.
In February 2013, ETFs and ETPs in Canada saw net inflows of $907 million US dollars. Equity ETFs and ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with US$641 million, followed by fixed income ETFs and ETPs with US$262 million, and leveraged inverse ETFs and ETPs with US$34 million, while commodity ETFs and ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with US$78 million.
Year to date through end of February 2013, ETFs and ETPs have seen net inflows of US$389 million. Fixed income ETFs and ETPs gathered the largest net inflows US$466 million, followed by leveraged inverse ETFs and ETPs with US$128 million, and active ETFs and ETPs with US$70 million, while leveraged ETFs and ETPs experienced the largest net outflows year to date with US$171 million.
“The flows into equity ETFs and ETPs show investors are starting to rotate out of cash and fixed income into equities as investor confidence continues to improve,” says Deborah Fuhr, Managing Partner at London-based ETFGI.
In February 2013, equity ETFs and ETPs saw net inflows of US$641 million. North American equity ETFs and ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with US$548 million, followed by ETFs and ETPs providing exposure to global equity indices with US$42 million, and global (ex-US) equity ETFs and ETPs with US$23 million.
Fixed income ETFs and ETPs saw net inflows of US$262 million. Corporate bond ETFs and ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with US$165 million, followed by high yield ETFs and ETPs with US$83 million, and broad/aggregate ETFs/ETPs with US$46 million, while government bond ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with US$37 million.
The Canadian ETF and ETP industry had 266 ETFs and ETPs, with 381 listings, assets of US$56 billion, from 9 providers on 1 exchange at the end of February 2013.
Horizons ETFs and ETPs gathered the largest net inflows in February with US$576 million, followed by BMO AM with US$339 million and PowerShares with US$113 million net inflows.
