ETFGI Reports The Global ETFs Industry Reached A New Milestone With 1,988 New Products Launched In 2024

ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm renowned for its expertise in subscription research, consulting services, events, and ETF TV on global ETF industry trends, reports the global ETFs industry has reached a new milestone with 1,988 new products launched in 2024. This represents a net increase of 1,366 prodcts after accounting for 622 closures. This surpasses the previous record of 1,841 new ETFs launched in 2021.

The distribution of new launches during 2024 is as follows: 746 in the United States, 606 in Asia Pacific (excluding Japan), and 323 in Europe. A total of 398 providers have contributed to these new launches, which are spread across 43 exchanges globally.

There have been 622 closures from 177 providers across 29 exchanges. The United States reported the highest number of closures at 196, followed by the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) at 156, and Europe at 156.

The new launches include 954 Active, 650 index Equity, and 191 index Fixed Income products.

The 1,988 new products are managed by 398 different providers. iShares launched the largest number of new products 96, followed by Global X ETFs with 69 and First Trust with 57.

Between 2020 to 2024, the global ETFs industry has seen a significant increase in the number of new launches going from 1,131 to 1,988. In 2024, the US and Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) have seen the largest launches reaching 746 and 606 respectively, while Latin America has seen the fewest launches only 26.

The US and Canada had record new launches in 2024 with 746 and 189 respectively. While Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) achieved its record new launches in 2021 with 645, Europe set its record of 434 in 2021, Latin America recorded 41 in 2021, Japan recorded 44 in 2023, while the Middle East and Africa reached 86 in 2020.

Between 2020 to 2024, the global ETFs industry, the US recorded its highest number of product closures in 2020 with 269, while Europe had its highest closures of 237 in 2023, Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) saw 192 closures in 2023, and Canada reported 87 in 2023.

Assets of US$14.85 Tn were invested in the global ETFs industry at the end of 2024. The global ETFs industry gathered US$207.73 billion in net inflows in December, bringing year to date net inflows to a record US$1.88 trillion. At the end of 2024, the Global ETFs industry had 13,198 products, with 26,244 listings, assets of US$14.85 Tn, from 814 providers listed on 81 exchanges in 63 countries, according to ETFGI's December 2024 global ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report (a monthly report which is part of a paid for subscription research service).

In 2024, the ETF market has experienced a dynamic surge, with significant asset accumulation by newly launched ETFs. The Top 3 ETFs highlights the dominance of cryptocurrency ETFs, with iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT US) holding US$51.72 billion in assets, followed by Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC US) with US$19.18 billion and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC US) with US$18.87 billion.

Reflecting the upswing in cryptocurrency investing since the approval of Bitcoin ETFs in the US in January 2024the US Securities and Exchange Commission approved Ethereum ETFs for trading in July 2024. Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE US) reached 4th place in the Top 25 by Asset with US$4.74 Bn, launched by Grayscale Advisors on the NYSE.

In addition to cryptocurrency focused ETF, the Top 25 list includes ETFs from various sectors such as high dividend, equity, active, and climate-related ETFs, demonstrating the wide range of investment opportunities available to investors today.
