ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm renowned for its expertise in subscription research, consulting services, events, and ETF TV on global ETF industry trends, reports the ETFs industry in the United States gathered a record US$1.17 trillion during 2024. Net inflows of US$147.31 billion were gathered during December, bringing year-to-date net inflows to a record US$1.17 trillion, according to ETFGI's December 2024 US ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. Highlights
- Record net inflows of $1.17 Tn in 2024, followed by 2021 net inflows of $919.77 Bn and the third highest net inflows of $607.25 Bn in 2022.
- Assets of $10.35 Tn invested in the ETFs industry in the United States at the end of 2024 are the second highest on record, below the record $10.59 Tn at the end November 2024.
- Assets increased 27.5% in 2024, going from $8.11 Tn at end of 2023 to $10.35 Tn.
- 32nd month of consecutive net inflows.
“The S&P 500 index decreased by 2.38% in December but was up by 25.02% in 2024. The developed markets excluding the US index decreased by 2.78% in December but is up 3.81% in 2024. Denmark (down 12.34%) and Australia (down 7.90%) saw the largest decreases amongst the developed markets in December. The emerging markets index increased by 0.19% during December and is up 11.96% in 2024. United Arab Emirates (up 6.42%) and Greece (up 4.21%) saw the largest increases amongst emerging markets in December”, according to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.
Asset growth in the ETFs industry in the United States as of the end of December
The ETFs industry in the United States had 3,930 products, assets of $10.35 Tn, from 364 providers listed on 3 exchanges at the end of December.
During December, ETFs gathered net inflows of $147.31 Bn. Equity ETFs gathered net inflows of $99.75 Bn in December, bringing 2024 net inflows to $605.93 Bn, much higher than the $307.30 Bn in net inflows in 2023. Fixed income ETFs had net inflows of $5.67 Bn during December, bringing 2024 net inflows to $181.71 Bn, higher than the $163.59 Bn in net inflows in 2023. Commodities ETFs reported net outflows of $1.17 Bn during December, bringing 2024 net inflows to $1.74 Bn, higher than the $8.24 Bn in net outflows in 2023. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $36.77 Bn during December, gathering net inflows of $313.23 Bn in 2024, much higher than the $140.69 Bn in net inflows in 2023.
Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETF‘s by net new assets, which collectively gathered $90.33 Bn in December. iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV US) gathered $23.14 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
