Equity Trading Volume In The First Quarter Exceeded That Posted In The Same Period Last Year By 33%, Posting The Highest Quarterly Trading Volume Ever On The Spanish Stock Market - Derivatives Trading Volume Hit A Record High In March, With 8.8 Million Co

In March trading in equities on the Spanish market through SIBE amounted to € 88.52 which represents a year on year increase of 42%. The number of trades reached 1.99 million, 43% up on the year.

The accumulated trading volume posted since January has come in at € 270.28 bn, 33 % up on 2005. The number of trades was 35% up on the year. Both figures represent quarterly record highs.

Trading on the Latibex market came in at € 68million, which represents a 60 % increase from the same month in 2005. The number of trades increased 106%. Accumulated trading volume on the Latibex market up to March was € 204 million, 73% up on 2005. The number of trades on this market grew over 94% on the year. Both figures represent quarterly record highs.

The return on the IBEX 35® index in March was 0.97% and the accumulated growth came in at 10.44%. The return on the IBEX 35® with dividends for the same period was 11.18 %. The monthly returns on the IBEX MEDIUM CAP® and IBEX SMALL CAP® were 15.76% and 20.04% respectively. The return on the FTSE Latibex TOP index in February was 9.88%.

Warrants and Certificates

Trading volumes in March 2006 on the warrants and certificates market came in at € 253 million, which represents a 36% increase over the same month in 2005. The number of trades reached 45.529, up 59% on the same month last year. The accumulated figure up to March was € 751 million, 37% up on 2005. The number of trades increased over 55%. Both figures represent quarterly record highs.

Futures and Options

In March Futures and Options trading through MEFF came in at 8.8 million contracts, 60% up on last year. The figure represents a record high, exceeding the 6.5 million contracts posted in December 2005. Trading volume in Stock Futures came in at 6.12 million contracts (+62%), hitting a new record as it exceeded the 4.6 million contracts recorded in March 2005. Stock Options also showed strong trading growth, at 1.65 million contracts, (+87%) and IBEX 35® Futures, at 507,399 contracts, which were 24% up on the same month last year. It is the second time that trading in this product has exceeded half a million contracts in a month.

The accumulated quareterly figure was 14 million contracts, 49% up on the same period last year. It is worth mentioning the heavy trading in Stock Futures, at 7,2 million contracts (+70%), Stock Options, at 3.7 million contracts (+46%) and IBEX 35® Futures, at 1.4 million contracts and a 17% increase on the year.

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading on AIAF in March reached € 66.05 bn, leaving an accumulated trading volume of € 207.09 bn at quarter-end and posting a 1.3% increase on the year. New issues in March came in at € 45.13 bn, a monthly record high on this market. The total volume of new issues during the first quarter represented € 124.25 bn, posting a 33.1% increase on the year.

The outstanding balance at the end of March was € 478.51 bn, recording an increase of 43.5% on the same period in 2005. Net financing provided during the first quarter grew 42.3% on the year, reaching € 36.09 million.

SENAF

Trading volume on SENAF in March was € 21.89 bn, a 5.7 % increase on the previous month. SENAF’s market share in electronic trading was 67.46%, slightly over that posted last month.
