EEX To Present Excellence Award For The Second Time At Its Brussels Spring Reception - Connie Hedegaard And Matthias Groote As Guests Of Honour

Date 10/04/2013

At its spring reception, the European Energy Exchange (EEX) presented the “EEX Excellence Award” for the second time on 9 April 2013. In addition to the presentation of the Excellence Award, the current developments on the market for emission allowances formed the focus of attention at the spring reception. Against this background, EEX was pleased to welcome Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, and Matthias Groote, Chairman of the Environmental Committee of the European Parliament, as guests of honour.

With the Excellence Award, EEX acknowledges outstanding academic papers dealing with current problems and challenges within the energy market. This year’s winners of the award focused on the subjects of cogeneration (doctoral thesis by Günther Westner, RWTH Aachen), the reserve supply (thesis by Christian Engelhardt, RWTH Aachen), options for the abatement of fugitive methane emissions in coal mining (master’s thesis by Oliver Ruyssevelt, Imperial College London) and the integration of electric vehicles into the power market (master’s thesis by Sebastian Wagner, University
of Freiburg).

“The quality of the theses submitted was again extraordinarily high”, said Iris Weidinger, Chief Financial Officer of EEX, who is also in charge of human resources at EEX Group. “The ‘EEX Excellence Award’ forms a special recognition of these excellent theses. With this award we, as EEX, want to contribute to the further scientific discussion of the diverse aspects of the energy market“, explained Iris Weidinger. The award was presented for the first time last year at the New Year’s Reception, in conjunction with the Grand Opening of EEX’s Brussels office.

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) is the leading European energy exchange. It develops, operates and connects secure, liquid and transparent markets for energy and related products on which power, natural gas, CO2 emission allowances and coal are traded. Clearing and settlement of all trading transactions are provided by the clearing house European Commodity Clearing (ECC).
