EEX To Launch New Short-Term Power Derivatives Contracts In May

Date 26/03/2026

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) will introduce a series of new short-term power futures for the Belgian and the Japanese Kansai power derivatives markets on 26 May, 2026.

The new Belgian Power Base Day, Weekend and Week Futures will complement EEX’s short-term power futures portfolio already offered across 12 European markets.

The new Day and Weekend Futures with both baseload and peak profiles for the Kansai area are an addition to the existing EEX’s Japanese power offering of long-term futures for up to six fiscal years for all three local markets currently served (Tokyo, Kansai, Chubu), and short-term futures for the Tokyo area.

Peter Reitz, CEO of EEX, commented: “Short-term power futures play an important part in trading strategies, allowing market participants to hedge prices with a short timeframe as a standard approach or in times of volatility. In addition, such contracts can be ideal vehicles to address any uncertainty arising from renewables integration, a major ongoing shift in today’s energy landscape. We, at EEX, are committed to provide all trading communities with the most appropriate tools to manage their price risk, be it only a day or years ahead.”

The EEX Japanese Power Derivatives market has grown substantially over the past years, with a record of 149.2 TWh traded in 2025, a doubling of the annual traded volume year-on-year. EEX has extended its offering on this market consistently, including the recent expansion to the Chubu area, the successful introduction of Fiscal Year Futures, as well as the launch of order book trading last year.

In 2025, the EEX Belgian Power Derivatives market increased 41% on the year before, in terms of traded volume.
