The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has extended exchange order book trading hours for its Japanese power derivatives market on 7 September 2026.
Exchange trading via the central order book has been available since April 2025, with only a two-hour trading window up until today. The extended hours now fully cover Japanese business hours (9:00am until 6:00pm Tokyo local time) and apply to both futures and options contracts across all available maturities and market areas, including Tokyo, Kansai and Chubu. This step reflects the continued momentum of the market and addresses growing interest from trading participants across the Asia-Pacific region.
Steffen Köhler, Chief Commercial Officer of EEX, comments: "Since the introduction of order book trading for Japanese Power in 2025, we have seen an increasing interest in trading the market in the central order book during the entire Japanese business day. By extending the trading hours, we are further supporting the trading community, improving price transparency and creating additional opportunities for trading and risk management. This will help foster market liquidity and further enhance our service offering for participants across the Asia-Pacific region. The continued growth in trading volumes confirms the strong demand for a reliable and well-functioning power derivatives market in Japan, and we remain committed to building on this momentum."
The EEX Japanese power derivatives market has maintained its strong growth trajectory in 2026, with year-to-date traded volumes reaching 151 TWh, exceeding the total annual volume traded in 2025. In the first eight months of 2026, volumes grew by 57% year-on-year, supported by increases in both futures and options trading. Japan is the fourth largest power market in the world, with an annual consumption of around 900 TWh.
