EEX Publishes 2026 Sales Calendar For Post-Purchases Within The German National Emissions Trading System

Date 04/11/2025

The European Energy Exchange (EEX), in alignment with the German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt) at the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), has published the 2026 schedule for the post-purchases of German national emissions trading system certificates (nEZ / nEHS) with the year identifier 2025.

The sale of nEHS allowances with the year identifier 2025 will take place each Tuesday between January and August 2026. In September, sales will take place on two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The first sale for the 2025 annual identifier will be held on 13 January 2026, last one on 17 September 2026. The time window for nEHS sales will be open to participating companies on the respective days from 09:00 to 15:00 CET/CEST.

On sales dates, companies subject to the German national emissions trading system can purchase nEHS certificates with the 2025 annual identifier at a fixed price of 55 euros/nEHS.

The possibility of post-purchases is limited by law to 10 per cent of the quantity already purchased by the respective participant in 2025 (Section 10 (2) sentence 3 in conjunction with (1) sentence 1 of the Fuel Emissions Trading Act (BEHG)). The decisive factor for calculating post-purchase limit is the quantity of nEHS certificates with the annual identifier 2025 held in the respective compliance account of a obligated company as of 31 December 2025.

In addition, EEX will carry out the sale and auctioning of nEHS certificates maturing from 2026 onwards on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. EEX publishes detailed information with regards to this here. According to current plans, the auctions will be held between July and October 2026. EEX is expected to publish the calendar with the provisional dates for the auctions and the provisional quantities to be auctioned, as well as the dates for the sale of the surplus quantities at the end of April 2026. If an earlier start is possible, this will be announced in due course.

The sales calendar for the German national emissions trading system for 2026 is available here.
