The European Energy Exchange (EEX) presented the EEX Excellence Award for outstanding academic theses for the fifth time last night. The event at which the exchange welcomed Maroš Šefčovič, the Vice-President of the European Commission, as a guest speaker took place during the EEX autumn reception at the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels.

In his speech, Maroš Šefčovič focused on the development of the energy union with which the EU-wide 2030 objectives for renewable energies and energy efficiency are to be implemented. In addition, Jesse Scott, energy analyst for the power markets at the International Energy Agency, discussed the most important challenges in implementing these objectives as part of the “EEX Talk”.

For 2015, EEX presented the Excellence Award for five scientific theses. The award winners dealt with the following subjects:

  • “Integration of Liberalised European Electricity Markets”, dissertation by Melanie A. Houllier, City University London
  • “Technical Options and Profitability Analysis for Short-Term Markets”, master’s thesis by Lara Lück, Ruhr-Universität Bochum
  • “Nationwide Savings Potential through Demand Response Measures”, research paper by Joscha Märkle-Huß, Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg
  • “The Integration of Renewable Energies in Continuous Intraday Markets for Electricity”, dissertation by Alexander von Selasinsky, Dresden Technical University
  • “The Marketability of Fluctuating Renewable Energies in the Liberalised Power Sector”, dissertation by Alexander Zipp, Saarland University

“Many of the theses submitted deal with the trends and innovations on the energy markets. I am convinced that young people in particular, perceive the challenges which we face as an opportunity. With the Excellence Award we, as EEX Group, want to promote young talent and support it by contributing their ideas to the scientific debate and putting it into practice”, explains Iris Weidinger, EEX Chief Financial Officer and member of the Management Board in charge of human resources.

EEX presents the Excellence Award for scientific papers or theses which deal with current political, regulatory, technical and economic questions in the fields of energy and agricultural products as well as exchange trading in these markets. Additionally, they can also focus on aspects of sustainability. The period for the submission of scientific papers for the 2016 EEX Excellence Award ends tomorrow, i.e. on 30th September 2016.
