The European Energy Exchange (EEX) launched the CBAM Reference Price, a new index, to drive further transparency for carbon pricing by providing guidance on price levels in a timely manner. The index has been developed to help companies assess the costs related to imports which will fall under the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in 2026. The first index was published on 29 August and will be available subsequently every Friday at 13:00 CE(S)T.

By publishing the reference price at the end of the trading week, we offer valuable data in a timely manner and help businesses across the globe prepare for the EU CBAM beyond its transitional phase.”
The reference price has been designed to support companies within the EU in relation to their commercial activities undertaken within the bloc, in particular the management of risk exposure. The new index shall provide a valuable reference for companies to calculate the embedded cost of carbon for selected industries, such as electricity, hydrogen or iron and steel imports, amongst others.
The EEX CBAM Reference Price reflects the average price of EUA auctions conducted by EEX on behalf of EU member states, providing data for all regions, including those with earlier business hours, such as the Asia Pacific. The price is available in 31 currencies on a weekly basis. For the year 2026, EEX will also publish the quarterly average of auction prices, while weekly historical data is also available for the year 2024.
