ECX Monthly Report And EUA & CER Volumes - October 2009

HIGHLIGHTS

TRADING VOLUMES: ECX trading volumes remained strong across all products during October, totalling 436 Mt with an Average Daily Volume of 19.8 Mt. Year-to-date volumes on the exchange have now surpassed 4 billion tonnes. The EUA Dec-13 Futures contract experienced another active month – (see chart on p. 4).

DAILY FUTURES: Trading in the EUA and CER Daily Futures continued to grow during October – a total of 12,098 contracts traded, with over a million EUAs trading on 28th October. ECX market share of the total spot market is approaching 25% (see chart).

OPEN INTEREST: The number of open positions in ECX futures and options increased further and currently stands at 825,877 lots.

NEW: On 23rd October the range of strikes for the EUA Options Contract was extended from €55 up to €100, with strike intervals of €0.50 (a EUA Dec-12 call option with a €100 strike price was entered as a block trade on 30th October). The last trading day of October saw the introduction of Dec12 / Mar13 spreads and Trade at Settlement facilities (TAS) for Dec10, Dec11 and Dec12 in EUA and CER Futures contracts.

MARKET MAKING: The ICE ECX EUA and CER Market Making programmes for Futures, Daily Futures and Options were extended from 1st October.
