TRADING VOLUMES: ECX volumes remained healthy despite the large numbers of traders on holiday during a quiet August. A total of 283,400 contracts traded during the month, a 36% year-on-year increase. Year-to-date Average Daily Volume remains above 20 Mt. Daily Futures volumes and ECX spot market share continue to increase.
OPEN INTEREST: Total open interest across all products surpassed 750 million contracts, or ¾ billion tonnes. EUA futures open interest has grown over the course of the year from 154 Mt to 349 Mt, an increase of over 125%.
PRICES: The price of EUAs firmed amid a volatile energy complex during August. The benchmark December 2009 contract opened the month at €13.85 and settled on Friday €14.93, an increase of nearly 10%.
