ECB Launches Pontes - A New Era For Tokenised Market Infrastructure In Europe: Richard Baker, Founder And CEO Of Tokenovate

Date 21/09/2026

The European Central Bank (ECB) has today launched Pontes, a new service connecting distributed ledger technology (DLT)-based assets with TARGET Services — marking a significant step towards integrating tokenised markets into mainstream European financial infrastructure.

The move enables transactions to settle against central bank money, offering banks a more scalable route to using tokenised assets within established market structures.

What Does This Mean for the Market?

Richard Baker, Founder and CEO of Tokenovate (https://www.tokenovate.com/), says the launch brings tokenised markets closer to the heart of the euro area's financial system.

Pontes brings tokenised markets another step closer to the core of the euro area's financial infrastructure. Connecting DLT-based assets with TARGET Services means transactions can settle against central bank money, giving banks a more scalable route to using tokenised assets within established market structures."

The Road Ahead: Interoperability and Continuous Settlement

Whilst Pontes will initially operate within existing market hours, Baker points to a longer-term opportunity for continuous — and potentially 24/7 — settlement. As adoption grows, he argues that interoperability will become increasingly critical.

As adoption grows, that will make interoperability across platforms, custodial networks and existing settlement systems even more important. Greater synchronisation between cash, assets and contractual obligations will be essential if tokenisation is to reduce reconciliation, release liquidity sooner and enable a more efficient transition towards programmable, atomic settlement.

A Milestone for European Financial Infrastructure

The launch of Pontes represents a pivotal moment for tokenised markets in Europe, paving the way for a more efficient, programmable and interconnected financial system. As the market evolves, the focus will increasingly shift to ensuring seamless interoperability across platforms and networks — a challenge that industry leaders like Tokenovate are already preparing for.
