Emirati Women’s Day is a significant opportunity to take pride in and celebrate the prominent role Emirati women have been playing in the country’s march toward development and prosperity. In this respect, we express our deep gratitude and appreciation to H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the UAE, who stands as an inspirational example for Emirati women. Her directives and endless support to enhance Emirati women’s status have greatly encouraged women to make greater contributions to our country’s development.

Following in the footsteps of our wise government, the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) is placing a large emphasis on Emirati women’s empowerment. It adopts policies and regulations that create a level playing field for Emirati women, thus helping them to climb the career ladder and assume leading positions. SCA is also keen to urge women to have a greater role on corporate boards and to be actively engaged in corporate and investment management. It does so through a legislative system that ensures that women get every opportunity possible to pursue their goals.

As part of its efforts to enhance the governance rules and institutional discipline standards, SCA is working to empower women by increasing their participation and presence on boards of public companies and in senior management positions there. The amended SCA Decision No. (7/Chairman) of 2016 on Institutional Discipline Standards and the Governance of Public Joint-Stock Companies lies at the top of SCA’s initiatives in this respect. It provides that female representation on corporate boards should not fall below 20 percent and that companies are obliged to disclose the reasons for not meeting that percentage.

Moreover, as part of an initiative to raise investor awareness and enhance financial inclusion through a national project that has already been launched, SCA has been urging Emirati women to increase their investment knowledge, to familiarize themselves with the technical aspects of trading, and to raise their awareness of the rules regulating securities markets.  As a result, there has been an increasing number of women investing in the UAE financial markets. In this context, it is worth mentioning thatSCA has entered into joint initiatives with the UAE Gender Balance Council and the General Women’s Union to organize awareness sessions about capital market trades and investment tools, as well as other long-term initiatives.
