Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes October 2011 Performance Report - Monthly Report On The Performance Of The Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes

The global Dow Jones Islamic Market Titans 100 Index, which measures the performance of 100 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks globally, had an up month in October with a gain  of 10.26%, closing at 2226.61. In comparison, the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 Index, which measures the 50 biggest companies worldwide, posted a gain of 9.41%, closing at 175.29.

− The Dow Jones Islamic Market Asia/Pacific Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in the Asia/Pacific region, increased 9.35% in October, closing at 2021.78. The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index, in comparison, posted a gain of 9.00%, closing at 126.52.

− Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones Islamic Market Europe Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of the 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in Europe, closed at 2094.47, a gain of 11.71% in October, while the conventional Dow Jones Europe Index gained 11.95%, closing at 248.26.

− Measuring the performance of 50 of the largest Shari’ah compliant U.S. stocks, the Dow Jones Islamic Market U.S. Titans 50 Index increased in October, closing at 2307.28. It represents a gain of 9.88%. The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 9.54%, closing at 11955.01.

Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes versus Conventional Dow Jones Indexes

In October, the Dow Jones DFM Titans 10 Index, measuring the 10 largest and most liquid stocks listed on the Dubai Financial Market, closed at 1933.34. It is a loss of 0.37%.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Kuwait Index posted a gain of 4.39%, closing at 879.12. Its conventional counterpart index, the Dow Jones Kuwait Composite Index, was up, closing at 211.03. It represents a gain of 3.00%.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Turkey Index closed at 3140.88, a performance gain of 6.31%, while the Dow Jones Turkey Total Stock Market Index closed at 1068.87, a gain of 0.05%.

Measuring the performance of Shari’ah compliant stocks of five of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, the Dow Jones Islamic Market GCC Index closed at 1212.13, a gain of 2.10%. The conventional Dow Jones GCC Index was up 2.26%, closing at 1383.77.

 

Other Markets and Asset Classes 

In October, the Dow Jones Islamic Market BRIC Equal Weighted Index increased 13.46%. It had a closing value of 1875.08. By comparison, the Dow Jones BRIC 50 Index closed at 554.57, a gain of 14.89%.

The Dow Jones Citigroup Sukuk Index, which measures the performance of global bonds complying with Islamic investment guidelines, increased 1.08%, closing at 132.33.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Sustainability Index, which measures sustainable practice business of companies respecting the Shari’ah laws, increased 11.15%, closing at 2413.13. The conventional Dow Jones Sustainability Index gain 11.45% with a closing value of 991.60.

Global October 2011 Industries Winners and Losers

All DJIM Industry Indexes were up for the month of October. The top three performing Dow Jones Islamic Market Industry Indexes were Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials with performances of 16.75%, 15.08% and 13.05%, respectively. The Dow Jones Islamic Market Consumer Goods, Dow Jones Islamic Market Telecommunications and Dow Jones Islamic Market Health Care Indexes were the bottom three performing industry indexes with performances of 6.81%, 4.89% and 4.49%, respectively.
