Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes November 2011 Performance Report

The global Dow Jones Islamic Market Titans 100 Index, which measures the performance of 100 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks globally, had a down month in November with a loss of 0.57%, closing at 2213.85. In comparison, the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 Index, which measures the 50 biggest companies worldwide, posted a loss of 2.31%, closing at 171.24.

  • The Dow Jones Islamic Market Asia/Pacific Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in the Asia/Pacific region, decreased 5.22% in November, closing at 1916.32. The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index, in comparison, posted a loss of 6.63%, closing at 118.14.
  • Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones Islamic Market Europe Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of the 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in Europe, closed at 2031.80, a loss of 2.99% in November, while the conventional Dow Jones Europe Index fell 4.88%, closing at 236.15.
  • Measuring the performance of 50 of the largest Shari’ah compliant U.S. stocks, the Dow Jones Islamic Market U.S. Titans 50 Index increased in November, closing at 2337.11. It represents a gain of 1.29%. The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 0.76%, closing at 12045.68.

Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes versus Conventional Dow Jones Indexes

In November, the Dow Jones DFM Titans 10 Index, measuring the 10 largest and most liquid stocks listed on the Dubai Financial Market, closed at 1897.11. It is a loss of 1.87%.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Kuwait Index posted a loss of 2.55%, closing at 856.67. Its conventional counterpart index, the Dow Jones Kuwait Composite Index, was down, closing at 206.78. It represents a loss of 2.01%.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Turkey Index closed at 2993.38, a performance loss of 4.70%, while the Dow Jones Turkey Total Stock Market Index closed at 1003.53, a loss of 6.11%.

Measuring the performance of Shari’ah compliant stocks of five of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, the Dow Jones Islamic Market GCC Index closed at 1195.77, a loss of 1.35%. The conventional Dow Jones GCC Index was down 1.41%, closing at 1364.26.

Other Markets and Asset Classes

In November, the Dow Jones Islamic Market BRIC Equal Weighted Index decreased 6.64%. It had a closing value of 1750.57. By comparison, the Dow Jones BRIC 50 Index closed at 510.35, a loss of 7.97%.

The Dow Jones Citigroup Sukuk Index, which measures the performance of global bonds complying with Islamic investment guidelines, decreased 0.62%, closing at 131.51.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Sustainability Index, which measures sustainable practice business of companies respecting the Shari’ah laws, decreased 1.97%, closing at 2365.70. The conventional Dow Jones Sustainability Index loss 3.79% with a closing value of 954.04.

Global November 2011 Industries Winners and Losers

All DJIM Industry Indexes were down for the month of November. The three Dow Jones Islamic Market Industry Indexes posting the narrowest loss were Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Health Care with down performances of 0.50%, 1.02% and 1.07%, respectively. The Dow Jones Islamic Market Basic Materials, Dow Jones Islamic Market Utilities and Dow Jones Islamic Market Technology Indexes were the three worst performing industry indexes with down performances of 4.27%, 4.02% and 2.60%, respectively.
