The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.82% in September, closing at 9988.54. Stock market indexes in Europe rose, while indexes in Asia fell and Globally indexes were down in September, according to preliminary monthly figures from global index providers, Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX Ltd.

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.82% in September, closing at 9988.54. Year-to-date the Average is down 4.45%. The last time the Average closed below 10,000 was August 17, 2004. (Index calculated in US dollars)

  • Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 50 index is up 2.02% for September, closing at 2673.08. Year-to-date, the index is up 0.48%. (Index calculated in Euros)

  • The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 index fell 3.06% in September to 103.58. So far this year, the index is down 1.9%. (Index calculated in US dollars)

  • The Dow Jones Global Titans 50 worldwide blue-chip market index fell 0.25% in September, closing at 180.92. Year-to-date, the index is down 2.09%. (Index calculated in US dollars)

September 2004 Sector Winners and Losers

  • In the U.S., the Energy sector was the biggest winner in September, posting a 7.61% gain. The Dow Jones Consumer, Noncyclical sector posted the biggest loss, dropping 4.73%.

  • In Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 600 Technology sector posted the biggest gain, climbing 7.74%. The Dow Jones STOXX 600 Travel & Leisure sector posted the biggest loss, falling 4.29%.

  • Globally, the Automobiles sector led, rising 7.12% in the Dow Jones Sector Titans Index. The Dow Jones Energy sector fell 3.55%.
