DIAMONDS Sparkle At CBOE

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the world's largest options exchange, yesterday announced that volume in options on DIAMONDS (DIA) established a new record on July 24, when 125,320 contracts (16,054 calls and 109,266 puts) traded.

The previous record was established during last week's volatile market when 77,396 contracts traded on Monday, July 15. Average daily volume in DIA options has been 37,391 contracts since its launch just two months ago, on May 20, 2002. At the close of trading yesterday, open interest in DIA options stood at 217,867 contracts (62,468 calls and 155,399 puts).

DIAMONDS are shares in an exchange-traded fund designed to track the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). Options on DIAMONDS provide investors with exposure to the DJIA in one transaction that can also offer the benefit of limited risk. CBOE also offers Options on the Dow (DJX) which are based on 1/100th the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Buyers of DIA or DJX options have pre-determined risk that is limited to the amount of premium paid.
