Deutsche Börse Launches Dax Trend Indicator - DAX Sentiment Index Measures The Market Participants' Expectations

Date 20/09/2002

Starting September 26, Deutsche Börse will publish a trend indicator for the DAX German blue-chip index. This will be the second sentiment index to be calculated by the exchange, which started out with the Neuer Markt Sentiment Index in January this year. Sentiment indices are trend indicators and reflect the investors' assessment of future market trends. The index will be calculated on a weekly basis in cooperation with Cognitrend, the analysis house specialized in behavioral finance, and published every Thursday before the market opens at the Deutsche Börse Web site (www.deutsche-boerse.com/ marketinfo).

The sentiment index for the DAX tracks the degree of optimism in relation to the pessimistic and neutral expectations for the DAX as well as the percentage change in these values from the previous week. The DAX Sentiment Index is not a forecasting instrument of Deutsche Börse, but instead reflects the market participants' expectations. The index often behaves like a contrary indicator. If pessimistic market assessments are predominant, for example, this generally points to rising stock-market prices in the future. Historical data for the index is available since the beginning of August.

Market sentiment indices are based on surveys of market participants. For the DAX Sentiment Index, every Wednesday Deutsche Börse surveys some 150 institutional investors on whether they think the DAX equities index will go up, down or move sideways in the next 30 days. One of the main quality feature of the index is the fact that only the assessments of active participants invested in the market are surveyed. Deutsche Börse's role, as a neutral partner, is above all to ensure the quality and continuity of the data, prepares the data and anonymize it. Cognitrend evaluates the data, calculates and interprets the Sentiment Index.
