Deutsche Boerse:Xetra Trading Resumes After Interruption - Operating System Error Due To Third-party Provider

Date 19/11/2001

Deutsche Börse interrupted electronic Xetra trading on Monday from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. (CET) after the Xetra trading system was shut down. The reason for shutting down was an error in a network program of the operating system that controls the link between the host computer and the trading participants. This error had also impaired communication with the external data dissemination system CEF, which did not disseminate any data as of 12:15. According to Deutsche Börse, the new Xetra release that was introduced on Monday was not the reason for the disturbance.

The Xetra system was back in service again as of 1:00 p.m after restarting, then the participants were automatically connected. After that, from 1:20 to 2:20 p.m., there was so-called Pre-Trading, during which time trading participants can review orders, change them and enter them. This was followed by an auction, and continuous trading started again at 2:30 p.m. The interruption did not impair data integrity, all orders were available after the system restarted.

Deutsche Börse obtains the operating system software for the Xetra host computer from a third-party provider; it is not an integral part of the Xetra software. Deutsche Börse analyzed the cause of the disturbance and ensured that this error will not occur again.
