Deutsche Boerse Group - 324 Billion Euros In Turnover On The German Stock

Based on the aggregate turnover statistics, a total volume of 324.5 billion euros was traded on the German stock exchanges in March, roughly 16 percent higher than the previous month's figure (February 2002: 280 billion euros). The March total comprises 252.7 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds as well as 71.8 billion euros in fixed-income securities.

The order-book statistics, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the Xetra order book and broker-supported trading on the floor, show that some 91.1 billion euros in volume was traded in equities on the German stock exchanges in March, about 17 percent higher than the previous month's figure (February 2002: 77.6 billion euros). Of this total, 84.6 billion euros was posted in German equities and some 6.5 billion euros in foreign equities. In the domestic shares, about 93 percent of the volume was traded through Xetra, another some 6 percent in trading on the floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FWB Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse). In foreign shares, about 91 percent of the total volume was posted on Xetra and the Frankfurt trading floor.

In March, the Xetra share of trading in the DAX blue chips was about 96 percent. In the MDAX (mid-cap DAX) stocks, some 81 percent of the volume was traded on Xetra, some 49 percent of the SDAX (small-cap DAX) volume and about 69 percent of the volume in Neuer Markt stocks.

Siemens was the most active DAX blue chip in March with 9.1 billion euros traded in its shares. Altana was the leading MDAX stock with 295.9 million euros in volume, and Qiagen topped the list of Neuer Markt stocks with 269.5 million euros in shares traded. In the SMAX (small-cap quality) segment, Philipp Holzmann ranked first with some 23 million euros in share turnover. The highest-volume exchange-traded fund in March was again the DAX EX with 1.9 billion euros in turnover. IBM was the leading stock in the Xetra US Stars segment, with volume of 36.5 million euros traded in its shares. Nokia ranked highest on the list of Xetra European Stars with 1.2 billion euros in share turnover.
