The order-book statistics, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the Xetra order book and broker-supported trading on the floor, show that some 80.3 billion euros in volume was traded in equities on the German stock exchanges in May, a slight decrease of 3 percent from April 2002 (82.9 billion euros). Of this total, 74.9 billion euros was posted in German equities and 5.4 billion euros in foreign equities. In the domestic shares, about 94 percent of the volume was traded through Xetra, another 4.8 percent in trading on the floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FWB Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse). In foreign shares, about 91 percent of the total volume was posted on Xetra and the Frankfurt trading floor.
In May, the Xetra share of trading in the DAX blue chips was about 96 percent. A new record was set by Xetra in May: 84 percent of total volume in MDAX equities was traded on Xetra. Some 43 percent of the SDAX (small-cap DAX) volume and 73 percent of the volume in Neuer Markt stocks was traded on Xetra.
Siemens was the most active DAX blue chip in May, with 6.7 billion euros in volume. Altana was the leading MDAX stock with 416 million euros in volume, and Qiagen topped the list of Neuer Markt stocks with 179 million euros in shares traded. In the SMAX segment, Leoni ranked first with some 23 million euros in share turnover. The highest-volume exchange-traded fund in May was again the DAX EX with 848 million euros in turnover. Cisco was the leading stock in the Xetra US Stars segment, with volume of 30 million euros traded in its shares. Nokia ranked highest on the list of Xetra European Stars with 938.4 million euros in share turnover.
The largest individual trade since the introduction of the electronic trading platform Xetra was traded in May in Xetra XXL, Xetra's functionality for block trading. Four million shares of Deutsche Bank worth 311 million euros were traded in Xetra XXL on May 17. A total of around 807.3 million euros were traded in Xetra XXL in May.
