Deutsche Boerse: 315 Billion Euros In Turnover On The German Stock Exchanges - Xetra Record In SDAX Stocks

A total of 315 billion euros in volume was traded on the German stock exchanges in October, about 15 percent below the previous month's level (September: 370.6 billion euros). The October total comprises 225,6 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds as well as 89.4 billion euros in fixed-income securities.

The order-book statistics, which are based on single counting of all transactions in the order book of Xetra and in broker-supported trading on the floor, show that a total volume of 89.8 billion euros was traded in equities on the German stock exchanges in October, about 8 percent higher than the previous month's level (September: 97.4 billion euros). Of this total, 81.7 billion euros were traded in German equities, and some 8 billion euros in international equities. In the domestic equities, roughly 92 percent of the volume was posted through Xetra, and another 6 percent in trading on the floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FWB Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse). In international equities, about 65 percent of the total volume was traded on Xetra and the Frankfurt trading floor.

A new record was set in Xetra trading of SDAX (small-cap quality index) stocks in October: Roughly 47 percent of the total turnover in SDAX stocks was posted on Xetra, beating its previous record of about 45 percent (September 2001). Xetra now has a market share of about 95 percent in the DAX blue chips, about 79 percent of the MDAX volume and about 61 percent in the case of Neuer Markt stocks.

Siemens was the most active DAX blue chip in October, with volume of about 8 billion euros traded in its shares. FAG Kugelfischer was the leading MDAX (mid-cap DAX) stock, with 205.4 million euros in shares traded. Qiagen topped the list of Neuer Markt stocks, with turnover of 248.1 million euros in its shares. In the SMAX (small-cap quality) segment, Zapf ranked first with volume of 8.5 million euros in shares traded. The highest-volume exchange-traded fund in October was the DAX EX with 1.3 billion euros in turnover. Cisco Systems was the leading stock among the Xetra US Stars, with a volume of 31 million euros traded in its shares.
