Cyprus Stock Exchange: Review of Developments For May 2001

During May there was a slight decrease in the General Price Index and a particular increase in the value of shares traded compared to April. The various figures and statistics are analysed below.

Prices

The last day of the month General Price Index was 189,07 points. It is worthy to mention, however, that the highest level that the index reached for the month was 207,30 points. On a sectoral level, sub-indices reached the following points: Banking sector 189,28 Approval Investment companies sector 186,17 Insurance companies sector 65,98 Manufacturing sector 66,74. Tourism sector 154,35 Trading sector 49,43 Building Materials and Construction sector 67,76, Information Technology 45,51, Financial Services 38,05, Fish Culture 58,75, Hotels with 106,91, and finally the Other Companies sector with 228,31 points.

Market Capitalization

The total market capitalisation (shares) reached £6.089 billion from £6.407 billion the previous month registering a decrease of 4,9%. According to this month results the Banking sector accounted for 32,57% of the total market capitalisation, the Other Companies sector 13,32%, and the Tourism sector 4,19%. The Trading sector 4,32%, the Manufacturing sector 6,44%, the Approved Investment Companies sector 6,53%, the Insurance sector 0,90%, the Building and Materials and Construction sector 3,41%, the Information Technology sector 7,51%, the Financial Services sector 10,43%, the Fish Culture sector 10,87%, and finally Hotels sector with 9,30% respectively, of the total market capitalisation. Moreover the total market capitalisation including the Corporate and Government bonds decrease to £7.476 billion compared to £7.739 billion at the previous month registering a decrease of 3,40%.

Transactions

The total value of transactions during the month in review reached £285 million with an average of £12,6 million per trading session. The Bank sector contributed 10,45% of the total value traded, which was the highest, whereas the Corporate Bonds had the lowest contribution with 0.04%.

Investors primarily focused their interest on the shares of L.K.Globalsoft.Com Ltd and Sharelink Financial Services Ltd with 13,27% and 5,90% respectively.
