Copenhagen Stock Exchange: The Equity Market Closed 2000 Handsomely, December Above Average

In December 2000, equity trading was DKK 67.6 billion. The value of average daily trading amounted to DKK 3.6 billion, a 59 per cent rise compared with the corresponding month a year earlier and 5 per cent higher than in November 2000.

For the full year, the value of equity trading reached a record DKK 835.6 billion in market value, a 78 per cent rise on 1999.

The KFX shares reached a total turnover of DKK 54.7 billion in December and they accounted for 81 per cent of the total turnover. Novo Nordisk was the most actively traded share of the month with a turnover of DKK 9.2 billion. Then followed Danske Bank with DKK 8.1 billion and Vestas Wind Systems with a turnover of DKK 7.5 billion. The KFX Index closed the year at 313.90, up 23 per cent on December 1999 and the same level as in November 2000. In 2000, the KFX Index reached 37 all-time highs peaking at 354.08 in October.

Since the launch in September 2000, the KVX Index, comprising growth companies, has been influenced by the negative trend on the major international exchanges such as Nasdaq. In December, the index fell by 13 per cent. The KFMX Index, comprising small and medium-sized companies, performed better; it only fell by 4 per cent from end-November to December.

The 10 most active shares in 2000 reached a total turnover of DKK 480.2 billion in market value and thus they accounted for more than half of the total turnover in 2000.

Bond trading amounted to DKK 553 billion in market value in December, a rise of 28 per cent on November 1999 and a rise of 15 per cent on December 1999. The average daily value of trading increased by 48 per cent on November to DKK 29 billion.

For the full year 2000, the turnover amounted to DKK 5,611 billion in market value, a fall of 22 per cent on 1999. The average true yield fell by 18 basis points over the month to 6.02 at end-2000. This was merely 3 basis points higher than at the beginning of the year. In 2000, the average true yield reached a low of 5.94 per cent in April and a high of 6.63 per cent in September.
