Copenhagen Stock Exchange: Handsome Trading Volume Despite Bearish Market In March

In March 2001, equity trading amounted to DKK 66.6 billion, which was below average thoug handsome compared to a bearish global market. The value of average daily trading amounted to a little more than DKK 3 billion, a 14 per cent fall on February 2001. Compared to the record month of March 2000, the trading volume fell by 18 per cent.

Novo Nordisk B was the most actively traded share with a turnover of DKK 8.4 billion in March. Then followed Vestas Wind Systems with DKK 7.6 billion, while Tele Danmark came in third with DKK 7.2 billion.

The 20 KFX shares reached a total turnover of DKK 53 billion and they accounted for 80 per cent of the total turnover. Tele Danmark was the only KFX company to be found among the 20 star performers - the share pricegained 9.3 per cent over the month. NKT Holding, William Demant Holding and i-data international were to be found among the 10 poorest performing shares with a 29 per cent fall over the month.

The KFX Index fell by 8 per cent compared with February and closed March at 291.04, the same level as in March last year.

In March, bond trading amounted to DKK 456 billion in market value, an increase of 11 per cent on February 2001, and a fall of 19 per cent compared with March 2000. The average daily value of trading rose by 1 per cent compared with February to DKK 20.7 billion. The government bonds reached a turnover of DKK 200 billion in market value, a rise of 11 per cent on February. Standard mortgage credit increased by 8 per cent and turnover amounted to DKK 215 billion in market value.

Repo trading increased by 11 per cent compared with February and amounted to DKK 1,423 billion in market value.

The average true yield closed the month at 5.81 per cent, a fall of 7 basis points compared with the end of February.

At end-March 2001, the volume of bonds in circulation amounted to DKK 1,975 billion, a 2 per cent rise on February. In nominal terms the figure totalled DKK 1,958 billion.
