The Nasdaq Biotechnology Index, launched on November 1, 1993, comprises companies traded on the Nasdaq National Market® tier of The Nasdaq Stock Market® that are primarily engaged in using biomedical research for the discovery or development of novel treatments or cures for human disease. Companies in the Index must also meet certain other eligibility criteria. On February 7, 2001 the Index was changed to a modified-market-capitalization- weighted Index.
