Date 14/03/2003

Trading volume on Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. (CME) yesterday reached 4,207,557 contracts, while volume on CME's GLOBEX® totaled 1,592,150 contracts. Excluding days on which CME employed special opening procedures for its non-traditional TRAKRSSMproducts, yesterday marked the second highest total volume day and the highest GLOBEX volume day in CME history.

Additional milestones included the first day E-mini S&P 500 futures exceeded one million contracts in a single day, along with record E-mini NASDAQ-100 futures and electronic foreign exchange trading.

Trading volume in E-mini S&P 500 futures totaled 1,003,414 contracts and E-mini NASDAQ futures reached 382,611. Foreign exchange products traded on GLOBEX hit a record 76,216 contracts. Electronic interest rate trading volume was 91,041 contracts, representing one of the busiest days for this product line on the GLOBEX platform.

"As equity markets experienced their most significant upturn in many months, CME's diverse array of futures and options on futures enabled investors to adjust their exposure to stock indexes, foreign exchange and interest rates-and they did so at record levels," said CME Chairman Terry Duffy.

"CME products and trading platforms have again demonstrated their ability to meet customer demand in a volatile global climate," said CME President and Chief Executive Officer Jim McNulty.

CME's all-time volume record was set Oct. 31, 2002, when 5,869,601 contracts changed hands, including 2,661,340 Select 50 TRAKRSSM contracts matched in a special opening procedure on GLOBEX. Excluding days on which CME employed special opening procedures for TRAKRS, CME's previous volume record was 4,256,378 contracts set on June 26, 2002 and its previous single day GLOBEX volume record was 1,500,430 contracts set on July 24, 2002.

The previous volume record in E-mini S&P 500 futures was set on Oct. 9, 2002 at 991,695, while E-mini NASDAQ-100 futures had previously set a single-day record on July 24, 2002 at 376,120 contracts. The previous record for foreign exchange products traded on GLOBEX was 66,753 on Feb. 18, 2003.

TRAKRS are non traditional futures contracts developed by CME and Merrill Lynch to allow securities account customers to efficiently track an index of stocks, bonds, currencies or other financial instruments. Because volume in new TRAKR products builds up over several weeks, they launch with high initial volume.
