CME's E-Mini S&P 500 Futures Sets New Daily Volume Record

Trading volume in the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's E- mini S&P 500 futures set another record on April 12 with 47,024 trades having been executed on the exchange's GLOBEX®2 electronic trading system during today's session.
April 12th's volume was the sixth time this year that the E-mini S&P 500 contract has surpassed its prior trading record. Through the first quarter of 1999, trading volume in E-mini S&P 500 futures was up over 177 percent compared to the same period last year. Launched in September 1997, the E-mini S&P 500 futures are now the CME's third most actively traded futures contract. Each E-mini S&P 500 futures contract is sized at USD50 times the S&P Stock Price Index and is one-fifth that of the CME's standard-size S&P futures contract that has been traded at the Merc since 1982. E-mini S&P 500 futures trade virtually around-the-clock, from 15:30 (Chicago time) each day until 15:15 the following day. On Sundays, trading begins at 17:30.
