CME Volume Rises 9.5 Percent Year-to-Date Through August - GLOBEX®2 Volume Soars Nearly 105 Percent In Same Period

Year-to-date trading volume on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) has risen 9.5 percent, totaling more than 151 million contracts. August volume reached 15.6 million contracts. Volume traded electronically on the GLOBEX®2 system rose 104.9 percent year-to-date, totaling 19,852,461 contracts.

E-mini Nasdaq 100 index futures contracts set a new all-time record of 883,176 in August, while E-mini S&P 500 Index futures reached a new high for any August of 1,438,965. For the third month this year, E-mini S&P 500 futures were the second mostly actively traded contract on the exchange.

Also among equity index products, standard sized Nasdaq 100 futures set a new August record of 310,549, along with Russell 2000 futures at 28,023, and S&P/BARRA Value Index futures at 1,243. Additionally, Nasdaq 100 and Russell 2000 options set new August records of 54,138 and 897, respectively.

E-mini Euro FX futures set an all-time high mark of 5,599.

For the month of August, GLOBEX2 volume totaled 2,625,845, a 75.2 percent increase over August 1999. Open interest, or the number of contracts outstanding at the close of trading, stood at 8,198,682 at month’s end.
