CME Open Interest Surpasses 17 Million Positions, Setting Record

Open interest on Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. (CME) rose for the first time to more than 17 million positions yesterday, Nov. 6, setting a new record at 17,107,848 open positions. Recently-launched E-mini Russell 2000 futures set both volume and open interest records yesterday, with 1,036 contracts traded and 2,032 open positions.

Included in the overall open interest record were record open interest levels in interest rate options, at 9,994,052 positions, and Eurodollar options, at 9,939,610 positions. Open interest is the number of futures and options contracts outstanding at the close of trading each day.

Yesterday's volume record in E-mini Russell 2000 futures-launched Oct. 24-represented the first time daily volume surpassed 1,000 contracts. The previous volume high was set Oct. 31 at 981. The new open interest high in E-mini Russell 2000 futures nearly doubles the previous level of 1,046 on Nov. 5.

The previous exchange-wide open interest record stood at 16,865,418 positions on Nov. 5. Previous records for interest rate options and Eurodollar options were also set on Nov. 5 at 9,870,589 and 9,870,147, respectively.
