CHX Sets Monthly Share Volume Record In October

The Chicago Stock Exchange (CHX) traded more shares in October than during any other month in its history. For the month ended October 31, 1999, total trade volume reached 2,671,149, up 83 percent over October 1998, while total share volume ended at a record 1,368,140,858, an increase of 48 percent from the same period last year.
"The fact that the CHX continues to set new volume records demonstrates that our success in combining the best of electronic trading technology with the human element of specialists and floor brokers is a model for exchanges of the future," said Bob Forney, CHX president and CEO.
The CHX's OTC program, under which the exchange trades Nasdaq-listed stocks, continued its explosive growth in October. Total trade volume in Nasdaq issues reached 841,257 up from 41,574 in October of '98. Total OTC share volume finished at 330,132,008, compared to 46,485,774 in the same period last year.
The CHX also maintained its lead in the 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. CT extended hours auction market trading. During October, the Exchange traded 21,057,867 shares in the half-hour after the primary markets closed, comprising 70 percent of the industry total.
The Chicago Stock Exchange was founded May 15, 1882 and is the second most active stock exchange in terms of share and trade volume.
