As part of the Office of the Chairman, the new Office of External Affairs combines the existing Offices of Public Affairs and Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs. Mr. Sobba's responsibilities as head of this office will include, among other things, the coordination of all agency dealings with the media, the Congress, the White House, other government entities, and interested industry organizations.
Prior to joining the Commission, Mr. Sobba, 43, was a principal in a lobbying and consulting firm that drew on his more than fifteen years experience working with the United States Congress and the executive branch to provide clients with a variety of lobbying and business consulting services. From 1997 to 2000, Alan was the Director of Government Relations and chief lobbyist for Major League Baseball. From 1985 to 1996, Alan worked for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association in a variety of roles.
In announcing the appointment of Mr. Sobba, Chairman Newsome said, "We at the Commission are extremely fortunate to have someone with Alan's unique qualifications, skills and background join our team. Alan comes with an acute awareness of the importance to develop mutual respect and understanding in order to get things done."
Mr. Sobba received his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University, an MBA from Arizona State University, and his law degree from the University of Kansas law school.
