Celebrating HKEX's 24th Anniversary

Date 21/06/2024

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) is pleased to mark the 24th anniversary of its listing and establishment.

Since 2000, HKEX has grown into a leading global market operator and a key connector between Mainland China and the rest of the world. That is reflected in HKEX’s market capitalisation, which has increased from $8.6 billion to $326 billion, as of 21 June 2024.

HKEX’s revenue and other income has increased from $2.3 billion in 2000 to $20.5 billion in 2023, reflecting solid fundamentals and the diversification of revenue streams.

HKEX’s securities market has seen average daily turnover of over $110 billion this year so far, compared with $13 billion in 2000, demonstrating sustained growth and investor interest. HKEX’s derivatives market has gone from strength to strength, with average daily volumes soaring to 1.56 million contracts as of May 2024, showcasing immense growth since 37,500 contracts in 2000.

HKEX is committed to continuously elevating the attractiveness and competitiveness of its markets and has been implementing various initiatives to enhance its market infrastructure, diversify its product offerings, and expand its global reach.

The landmark Connect programme, which initially began with stocks, has been expanded to include bonds, ETFs, interest rate swaps, and now to REITs.

New listing chapters for innovative companies have been introduced, and both the Indonesia Stock Exchange and Saudi Exchange have recently been added into its list of Recognised Stock Exchanges.

Additionally, HKEX, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Government and regulators, has announced arrangements for severe weather trading, further aligning Hong Kong’s markets with global standards and cementing the city’s role as an international financial centre.
