CBT, UIC Sponsor Interest Rate Swap Futures Seminar

Date 12/10/2001

The Chicago Board of Trade's (CBOT®) interest rate swap futures contracts, which will begin trading on Friday, October 26, will offer institutional market participants -- including bank treasurers and asset-liability managers, mortgage passthrough traders, mortgage servicing managers, portfolio managers, and swap dealers --a superior vehicle for hedging credit and interest rate exposure.

These new contracts will be the subject of a conference jointly hosted by the CBOT® and the Department of Finance of the University of Illinois at Chicago on Thursday, October 18, 2:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the Chicago Board of Trade Visitors' Center Auditorium at 141 West Jackson Boulevard. Admission is free.

Bernard W. Dan, Executive Vice President of the CBOT®, will address the conference. Says Dan, "These new contracts will reinforce the Chicago Board of Trade's preeminent franchise in world capital markets. The CBOT® will continue to take advantage of product-development opportunities presented by emerging market trends. This, coupled with the liquidity CBOT® members bring to all the exchange's products, will further enhance our service to our customers."

Professor Gib Bassett, Head of the Department of Finance at UIC, will host the conference, which will include an overview of the interest rate swap market, valuation of the new interest rate swap futures contracts, and the direction of new product development at the CBOT®. "We are very excited about sponsoring presentations on innovative financial products and hearing from leaders in the field," says Bassett.

Dr Richard Sandor, President, of Chicago-based Environmental Financial Products, will speak, as will representatives from Salomon Smith Barney and the Chicago Board of Trade.

UIC's Department of Finance initiated the conference as part of an continuing program to bring together academic and business leaders in Chicago. Graduate students will be in attendance. The Department was recently ranked 23rd in the nation among graduate finance departments by US News and World Report.
