CBOT<SMALL>®</SMALL> May Volume Soars 50.4% To 43,797,299 Contracts, The Highest In Exchange's 155-Year History - Total Reflects 4 Record Days In May

Date 03/06/2003

Soaring 50.4% in May to 43,797,299 contracts from 29,119,791 a year earlier, Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) volume set an all-time high for any month in the exchange's 155-year history. The record monthly total reflects four daily records set during the month, including the exchange's first-ever daily trade of more than 3 million contracts--a total of 3,286,987 on May 28.

CBOT Chairman Charles P. Carey said, "The 50% increase in volume in May comes atop a gain of 29% in April. This trend of sharply increased volume reflects the fact that our markets remain the bulwark of liquidity and transparency in times of continually shifting uncertainty and risk, whether it's related to the Federal Reserve no-action stance on interest rates, the easing of tensions related to the Iraq war, rebounding equity values, or while the weaker dollar proves helpful for our agricultural markets."
