CBOT's June Volume At 19,572,384 Contracts - Financial Products Boom During Second Quarter

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) announced today trading volume of 19,572,384 contracts for June 2000, marking the fifth busiest June in exchange history. Volume in 10-Year Agency Debt futures and options and Treasury Flex options contracts soared during the second quarter 2000, with Agency options up 2,803% from first quarter 2000, and Treasury Flex options up 21,720% from second quarter 1999.

Trading of 10-Year Agency Debt futures rose 550% during the second quarter 2000. Agency futures set a daily volume record on June 2, at 21,550, set a daily open interest record on June 23, at 41,423, and set a monthly volume record at 188,979.

Trading of 10-Year Agency Debt options rose 2,802.9% during the second quarter 2000. 10-Year Agency options set a daily volume record on June 29, at 8,600, and set a daily open interest record on June 23, at 31,734, and set monthly volume record at 49,828.

Trading in the second quarter of Flex 10-Year Treasury Note options rose 100% from first quarter 2000 at 21,820 contracts, and increased 21,720% from second quarter 1999.

Trading in the second quarter of Flex 5-Year Treasury Note options rose 539% from first quarter 2000 at 3,900 contracts, and increased 387.5% from second quarter 1999.

Trading in the second quarter of 30-Day Fed Funds futures rose 27.8% from first quarter 2000 and 59.2% from second quarter 1999. Fed Funds set a monthly volume record of 156,972 contracts, with YTD volume at 785,294-reflecting an 82% increase from the same period a year ago.

Wheat futures set a new monthly volume record in June at 759,371 contracts.

Corn Options set a daily open interest record on June 19, at 690,036 contracts.

Electronic Order Routing to Open Outcry Markets Continues Momentum

For the month of June, record percentage of futures orders were filled by floor brokers using electronic order receipt devices-22% total, including 26% agricultural orders and16% financial orders.

1,765,932 orders have been electronically routed year-to-date, of which 595,588 have been filled. This represents an increase of 111% and 130%, respectively, from the same period in 1999.

7,171,129 contracts have been electronically routed to floor brokers, of which 3,572,446 have been filled-representing an increase of 115% and 146% respectively from the same period in 1999.

111 electronic order receipt devices were used by floor brokers filling orders for 28 member firms-representing an increase of 80% in the number of broker devices used in May 1999.

Ten-Year Treasury Note futures were up 17.5% from June 1999 at 3,705,956 and up 37.3% year-to-date (YTD) at 24,229,375.

Ten-Year Treasury Note options at 789,311 in June, up 3.6% year-to-date (YTD) at 5,814,180.

Five-Year Treasury Note futures were up 13.8% from June 1999 at 1,757,341 and up 48.1% YTD at 12,697,808.

Five-Year Treasury Note options were up 11.9% from June 1999 at 212,117 and up 60.6% YTD at 2,087,544.

Two-Year Treasury Note futures were up 11.7% from June 1999 at 105,192 and up 18.2% YTD at 651,062.

Thirty-Day Fed Fund futures at 156,972 in June, with YTD volume of 785,294, up 82% from the same period in 1999, and up 59.2% from second quarter 1999.

10-Year Agency Debt futures at 188,979 in June were up 19.6% from May, and up 550% in the first quarter 2000.

10-Year Agency Debt options at 49,828 in June were up 167.5% from May, and up 2,802.9% in the first quarter 2000.

Stock Index Futures and Options

CBOT® DJIASM futures were up 1.5% YTD at 2,013,707.

CBOT DJIA options were up 24.6% YTD at 116,130.

Agricultural Futures and Options

Corn futures were up 2.3% from May at 1,830,729, and up 14.9% from June 1999. YTD volume was up 26.3% at 9,802,911, for increases of 4.4% from first quarter 2000 and 25.4% from second quarter 1999.

Corn options were up 18.7% from May 2000 at 714,706, and up 78% from June 1999 at 601,962. YTD volume was up 86% at 2,969,076, for increases of 26.7% from first quarter 2000 and 74.3% from second quarter 1999.

Soybean futures were up 13.3% from June 1999 at 1,302,033, and up 17.1% YTD at 7,065,507-registering increases of 10.1% from first quarter 2000, and 26.1% from second quarter 1999.

Soybean options were up 13.8% from June 1999 at 454,487, and up 6.2% YTD at 2,117,893-for increases of 46.7% from first quarter 2000, and 31.7% from second quarter 1999.

Soybean Meal futures were up 7% from May at 606,190, and up 9.2% YTD at 3,189,367-for increases of 5.9% from first quarter 2000 and 8.3% from second quarter 1999.

Soybean Meal options were up 4.3% from May at 77,194, and up 36.4% from June 1999. YTD volume was up 2.9% at 327,105-for increases of 39% from first quarter 2000, and 26.1% from second quarter 1999.

Soybean Oil futures were up 18.2% from May at 533,376, and up 9% from June 1999. YTD volume was up 1.3% at 2,782,185-for increases of 4.7% from first quarter 2000, and 9.2% from second quarter 1999.

Soybean Oil options at 45,572 contracts in June, and YTD volume of 319,501-up 4.7% from first quarter 2000, and up 9.2% from second quarter 1999.

Rough Rice futures at 22,684, up 98.1% from May, and up 98.7% from June 1999. YTD volume was up 35.7% at 93,547-registering increases of 27.9% from first quarter 2000, and 79.1% from second quarter 1999.
