CBOT'S July Volume Highest Monthly Total Ever At 33,240,174 Contracts - Up 69.6% From July 2001

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) today announced trading volume of 33,240,174 contracts for July 2002, up 69.6% from July 2001, up 14.5% from June 2002, and up 27.4% year-to-date (YTD) at 186,364,566. July 2002 volume was the highest monthly volume total in exchange history.

July Highlights Included:

  • CBOT® average daily volume: 1,510,917, up 61.9% July 2001
  • Total exchange month-end open interest: 7,148,201, up 14.3% from June 2002 and up 33.3% from July 2001
  • Ten-Year Treasury Note futures (open auction) set a daily open interest record on July 29 at 988,564
  • Ten-Year Treasury Note options (open auction) set a monthly volume record of 2,973,700 and set a daily open interest record on July 26 at 1,859,692
  • Soybean Meal futures (open auction) set a monthly volume record of 802,848
  • DJIASM futures (open auction) set a monthly volume record of 787,349
  • 5-Year Interest Rate Swap futures (open auction) set a monthly volume record of 7,975 and set a daily open interest record at 2,768

Financial Futures and Options

  • U.S. Treasury Bond futures were up 9.2% from June 2002 and up 54.1% from July 2001 at 5,157,893
  • U.S. Treasury Bond options were up 25.9% from June 2002 and up 71.6% from July 2001 at 1,584,657, and up 5.6% YTD at 7,775,509
  • Ten-Year Treasury Note futures were up 19.0% from June 2002 and up 157.1% from July 2001 at 8,980,821, and up 55.3% YTD at 48,768,369
  • Ten-Year Treasury Note options were up 81.9% from July 2001 at 2,992,169 and up 71.5% YTD at 17,607,607
  • Five-Year Treasury Note futures were up 8.3% from June 2002 and up 160.7% from July 2002 at 4,437,442, and up 62.0% YTD at 26,805,311
  • Five-Year Treasury Note options were up 9.1% from June 2002 and up 182.2% from July 2001 at 781,169, and up 85.0% YTD at 4,866,234
  • Two-Year Treasury Note futures were up 89.7% from July 2001 at 177,001
  • Two-Year Treasury Note options were up 418.1% from June 2002 and up 1,166.4% from July 2001 at 4,901
  • Thirty Day Federal Fund futures were up 31.7% from June 2002 and up 63.3% from July 2001 at 523,567

Agricultural Futures and Options

  • Corn futures were up 5.8% from June 2002 at 1,958,374 with YTD volume at 10,251,522
  • Soybean futures were up 34.3% from June 2002 and up 16.8% from July 2001 at 1,762,217, and up 16.5% YTD at 8,405,373
  • Soybean Meal futures were up 21.3% from June 2002 and up 13.6% from July 2001, and up 6.6% YTD at 4,090,436
  • Soybean Oil futures were up 19.2% from June 2002 at 701,455
  • Rough Rice futures were up 206.0% from July 2001 at 14,084

Stock Index Futures and Options

  • CBOT® DJIA futures volume in July totaled 811,518 contracts, an increase of 31.6% from June 2002 and up 153.2% from July 2001; year-to-date volume up 41.1% at 3,772,759
  • CBOT DJIA options for July 2002 totaled 34,518, up 37.6% from June 2002 and up 47.7% from July 2001

Electronic Trading System

  • July 2002 volume reached a record high of 13,464,589 contracts, up 28.9% from June 2002 and up 253.3% from July 2001, and up 152.3% YTD at 64,038,288.
  • Average daily volume up 237.3% from July 2001 at 612,027
  • U.S. Treasury Bond futures set a daily volume record on July 24 at 268,615
  • Ten-Year Treasury Note futures set a daily volume record on July 24 at 542,830
  • Five-Year Treasury Note futures set a daily volume record on July 24 at 252,426
  • All commodities set a daily volume record on July 24 at 1,095,694

Electronic Order Routing

  • Year-to-date, 3,747,726 futures and options orders, excluding futures spreads, were electronically sent directly to floor brokers using order receipt devices. A new monthly high of 480,245 futures orders entered with a record of 240,873 filled.
  • The following records were established during the month of July.
  • Futures orders entered hit a high of 31,858 on July 22, 2002 with a record of 18,166 filled.
  • Option orders filled set a monthly record of 36,692.
  • Option orders entered on July, 22 2002 reached a high of 6,372.
  • Monthly records were reached for both Financial and Agricultural futures orders filled by brokers using order receipt devices (Electronic Clerk). In the agricultural room, member firms use electronic order routing devices (COMET, Order Direct) to send orders that are filled and/or endorsed by the pit brokers.
