CBOT to Increase Promotion of Exchange's Marketprofile

Date 02/01/2003

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), the world's oldest derivatives marketplace, today launched a new section of www.cbot.com to feature information on and promote the exchange's marketprofilesm decision support tool. The site also features a new marketprofilesm logo, slogan and banner advertisements, all designed to increase promotion of this product and the benefits it provides to market participants.

Steve Dickey, CBOT® Vice President responsible for market data products and information, said, "We are excited about this initiative, because we believe it will bring increased attention to marketprofilesm and make market participants more aware of the benefits it can bring to them. Our new slogan, 'see the market like never before,' is practical and informative, because the marketprofilesm display is truly a different way to look at price behavior and patterns. It allows a trader to "see" and "hear" how the market behaves. The web site also serves as a powerful vehicle for our campaign to promote and increase market awareness of the marketprofilesm products."

Marketprofilesm displays price and time information in a unique method, which helps market participants reveal pricing patterns as they develop. Price is displayed on the vertical axis and time brackets on the horizontal axis. In addition, tick counts (each price change) are summed at each price and used in some marketprofilesm applications to reflect transaction activity at each price level. Basically, the tick counts are used as a surrogate for trading volume, which can be an important support tool in confirming price movements and patterns. Another important concept behind marketprofilesm is the establishment of the 70 percent value area, which represents the range where 70 percent of the days' trading volume has occurred.

The marketprofilesm site, www.cbot.com/marketprofile , provides a wealth of information, including a list of marketprofilesm providers and links to each provider, marketprofilesm examples, educational and study materials, books and articles on marketprofilesm, and testimonials from actual marketprofilesm users. Marketprofilesm is offered by a variety of market data vendors and is licensed by the CBOT. It was developed by exchange member Peter Steidlmayer and the CBOT in the 1980s.
