CBOT Quarterly Volume Climbs 26.7 Percent To Set New Record - March Volume Soars 29.0 Percent To All-Time Monthly High Of 66,543,441 Contracts Quarterly - Average Daily Volume Up 28.8 Percent From Last Year

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) announced today that Exchange-wide volume climbed to a new quarterly record.  For the quarter ended March 31, volume reached a record of 173,100,942 contracts, up 26.7 percent from the same quarter last year.  Average daily volume for the quarter was 2,837,720 contracts, up 28.8 percent over last year.

In addition, volume in March rose to a new monthly record of 66,543,441 contracts, up 29.0 percent from 2004.  The prior all-time monthly record was 61,399,407 contracts set in February 2005.  Exchange-wide average daily volume in March was up 34.9 percent from levels seen in March 2004 at 3,024,702 contracts.

On the CBOT’s electronic trading platform, total volume soared to a new quarterly record of 108,080,383 contracts, up 46.0 percent from the previous year.  In March, electronic trading volume rose to a monthly record of 41,215,400 contracts. 

The CBOT’s Financial futures and options complex set a new monthly volume record at 55,952,566 contracts, up 10.4 percent from the previous record.  Financial futures volume rose to a new monthly high of 44,584,675 contracts, up 4.9 percent from the previous record, while Financial options increased to 11,367,891 contracts, up 9.2 percent from the prior record.

Total Exchange open interest at the end of March rose 23.6 percent from last year to 12,914,463 contracts. Exchange-wide open interest set a new daily record of 13,809,450 contracts on March 23.  In addition, open interest in several Financial and Agricultural products rose to new peaks.  Ten-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures reached a new high of 2,147,245 contracts on March 23.  Soybean futures open interest climbed to 308,206 contracts on March 15, while Wheat options open interest rose to 209,909 contracts on March 23.

Within the CBOT’s Precious Metals complex, total open interest climbed to an all-time high of 11,864 contracts on March 15.  That same day, open interest in full-sized Gold futures increased to 4,324 contracts.

Year-to-date through March 2005, 2,314,354 futures and options orders, excluding futures spreads, were electronically sent directly to floor brokers using Electronic Clerks, or order receipt devices.  In addition, in March, a new monthly high of 85 percent of total Agricultural futures orders were filled electronically, compared to 79 percent in March 2004.

Financial Futures and Options Highlights

  • Financial futures and options complex trade rose to a new monthly record of 55,952,566 contracts, an increase of 37.8 percent from 2004
  • U.S. Treasury futures complex volume rose to a monthly record of 43,261,602 contracts
  • Five-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures volume rose to a monthly record of 11,848,921 contracts, an increase of 52.4 percent from 2004
  • Ten-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures rose to a monthly record of 21,132,813 contracts, an increase of 24.4 percent from 2004
  • Five-Year U.S. Treasury Note options rose to a new record of 2,174,649 contracts, an increase of 74.9 percent from 2004
  • Ten-Year U.S. Treasury Note options rose to a new monthly record of 7,068,478 contracts
  • U.S. Treasury Bond futures volume rose to 8,573,724 contracts, an increase of 28.2 percent from 2004
  • Two-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures rose to 1,706,144 contracts, an increase of 170.8 percent from 2004
  • Thirty-Day Fed Fund futures volume rose to 1,184,285 contracts, an increase of 80.6 percent from last year
  • Ten-Year Interest Rate Swap futures volume rose to 89,406 contracts, up 18.0 percent from the previous year
  • Five-Year Interest Rate Swap futures volume rose to 39,745 contracts, an increase of 60.0 percent from the previous year

Agricultural Futures and Options Highlights

  • Agricultural futures and options complex trade totaled 8,051,513 contracts for March 2005
  • Wheat futures rose 12.8 percent YTD to 2,494,358 contracts
  • Corn futures rose to 2,278,130 contracts, an increase of 4.0 percent from last year
  • Soybean futures totaled 1,959,893 contracts for March 2005
  • Mini Soybean futures rose 11.6 percent from last year to 50,372 contracts
  • Wheat options rose 44.5 percent from last year and 38.2 percent from last month to 223,057 contracts.  Volume rose 24.4 percent YTD to 532,768 contracts
  • Corn options rose 36.2 percent from last month to 511,208 contracts
  • Soybean options rose 12.9 percent YTD to 1,844,598 contracts
  • Soybean Oil options rose 13.3 percent from last month to 62,640 contracts

Precious Metal Futures

  • Precious Metals futures trade totaled 78,459 contracts, an increase of 39.9 percent from last year
  • Full-sized Gold futures rose to 36,783, an increase of 74.7 percent from last month
  • Mini-sized Gold futures rose to 26,383 contracts, an increase of 42.3 percent from last month
  • Mini-sized Silver futures volume totaled 10,387 contracts for March 2005

Equity Complex Futures and Options

  • Equity Index futures and options complex trade rose to 2,459,966 contracts, an increase of 45.9 percent from last month
  • DJIASMfutures rose to 226,113 contracts, an increase of 109.7 percent from last month
  • DJIASMoptions rose to 12,448 contracts, up 26.4 percent from last month
  • Mini-sized DowSM ($5) futures rose to 2,144,927 contracts, an increase of 4.5 percent fro last year
  • Mini-sized DowSM ($5) options rose to 76,478 contracts, an increase of 154.7 percent from last year
