CBOT President and CEO Bernard Dan said, "In October the CBOT reached a new all-time annual trading volume record, surpassing the prior record set by the exchange in 2003. Total exchange open interest at the end of October rose 34.3 percent to 11,858,809 contracts from last year. In addition, daily open interest records were set in U.S. Treasury and equity index futures. On October 27, open interest in Ten-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures rose to a record 1,752,276 contracts. Open interest in mini-sized DowSM options set a record of 120,813 contracts on October 14.
The CBOT’s 100 percent electronically traded Precious Metals complex, which is composed of mini-sized and full-sized Gold and Silver futures contracts, performed strongly in October. Volume in full-sized Gold futures, which were launched along with full-sized Silver futures on October 6, totaled 18,655 contracts. In addition, mini-sized Gold futures hit a new monthly volume record of 42,952 contracts in October.
Total CBOT options volume increased 13.9 percent from last year to 9,193,220 contracts and 36.6 percent YTD to 94,202,406 contracts. Financial options volume gained 25.3 percent from last year to 7,931,021 contracts and 34.2 percent YTD to 78,380,193 contracts. Agricultural options trade increased 47.3 percent YTD to 15,243,574 contracts.
Year-to-date through October, 6,745,511 futures and options orders, excluding futures spreads, were electronically sent directly to floor brokers using Electronic Clerks, or order receipt devices. That represents an increase of 14 percent from the 5,913,952 orders electronically sent in the same period in 2003. In addition, from January through October, 83 percent of total Agricultural futures orders were filled electronically, compared to 72 percent in 2003.

- Volume rose 30.2 percent YTD to 401,238,902 contracts.
- Thirty Day Fed Funds options set a monthly volume record at 694,094 contracts.
- Thirty Day Fed Funds options set a daily volume record at 105,951 contracts on October 26.
- U.S. Treasury bond futures rose 10.5 percent from last year to 5,658,621 contracts and 10.8 percent YTD to 59,660,853 contracts.
- Ten-Year Treasury Note futures rose 22.3 percent from last year to 16,621,970 contracts. Volume rose 29.8 percent YTD to 160,073,835 contracts.
- Five-Year Treasury Note futures rose 20.8 percent from last year to 7,686,202 contracts. Volume rose 40.3 percent YTD to 85,015,711 contracts.
- Two-Year Treasury Note futures rose 141.2 percent from last year to 678,045 contracts. Volume rose 104.1 percent YTD to 7,002,938 contracts.
- Thirty-Day Fed Fund futures rose 113.9 percent from last year to 999,239 contracts. Volume rose 37.7 percent YTD to 10,197,063 contracts.
- Ten-Year Treasury Note options rose 21 percent from last year to 4,944,355 contracts. Volume rose 33.9 percent YTD to 47,493,994 contracts.
- Five-Year Treasury Note options rose 72 percent from last year to 1,314,520 contracts and 80.6 percent YTD to 14,829,606 contracts.
- Thirty-Day Fed Fund options rose 780.8 percent from last year and 62.4 percent from September to 694,094 contracts. Volume rose 174.4 percent YTD to 3,923,676 contracts.
- Agricultural futures and options complex trade was up 20.8 percent YTD at 72,664,402 contracts.
- Wheat futures rose 15.2 percent YTD to 6,639,200 contracts.
- Corn futures rose 28 percent YTD to 20,395,311 contracts.
- Soybean futures rose 55.3 percent from September to 1,635,288 contracts and 10 percent YTD to 15,924,604 contracts.
- Mini soybean futures rose 70.6 percent from September to 38,881 contracts and 64.9 percent YTD to 303,658 contracts.
- Soybean meal futures rose 6.3 percent YTD to 7,212,571 contracts.

- Mini Gold futures rose 144.2 percent from last year and 49.8 percent from September to 42,952 contracts. Volume rose 232.8 percent YTD to 329,505 contracts.
- DJIASM futures and options complex trade was up 55.8 percent from last year and 15 percent from September at 2,252,231 contracts. Volume was up 51.8 percent YTD at 19,930,296 contracts.
- Mini ($5) DowSM futures rose 61.4 percent from last year and 17.7 percent from September to 1,911,793 contracts. Volume was up 91.7 percent YTD to 17,161,431 contracts.
- Mini ($5) Dow options volume rose 71.6 percent from September and 95 percent since their launch in February to 161,521 contracts.
