CBOT January Exchange-Wide Volume Rises 9.6 Percent From Last Year - Open Interest Increases 21.8 Percent To 11,767,002 Contracts

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT®) today announced that Exchange-wide volume in January was 45,158,094 contracts, up 9.6 percent from 2004. Exchange-wide average daily volume in January increased 9.6 percent to 2,257,905 contracts from levels seen in the prior year. In addition, total Exchange open interest at the end of January rose 21.8 percent from last year to 11,767,002 contracts.

New open interest records were set in the CBOT’s Treasury, Agricultural and Precious Metals futures markets. Open interest in Two-Year U.S. Treasury Note futures surged to a record 317,217 contracts on January 24, while open interest in Wheat futures rose to a high of 221,405 contracts on January 31.

The CBOT’s 100 percent electronically traded Precious Metals complex, which is composed of mini-sized and full-sized Gold and Silver futures contracts, performed strongly in January. Open interest in CBOT full-sized Gold futures, which were launched with full-sized Silver futures on October 6, rose to a new high of 3,276 contracts on January 19.

Year-to-date through January, 553,729 futures and options orders, excluding futures spreads, were electronically sent directly to floor brokers using Electronic Clerks, or order receipt devices. In addition, in January, a new monthly high of 84 percent of total Agricultural futures orders were filled electronically, compared to 76 percent in January 2004.

Financial Futures and Options Highlights

  • Financial futures and options complex trade was up 13.8 percent from last year at 37,113,416 contracts.
  • U.S. Treasury Bond futures rose 22.1 percent from last year to 6,134,763 contracts.
  • Five-Year Treasury Note futures rose 33.1 percent from last year to 7,797,674 contracts.
  • Two-Year Treasury Note futures rose 207.3 percent from last year to 953,728 contracts.
  • Thirty-Day Fed Fund futures rose 85.6 percent from last year and 7.2 percent from December 2004 to 836,250 contracts.
  • U.S. Treasury Bond options rose 21.3 percent from last month to 1,128,738 contracts.
  • Five-Year Treasury Note options rose 64.8 percent from last year and 61.4 percent from last month to 1,627,609 contracts.
  • Two-Year Treasury Note options rose 1,005.9 percent from last year and 182 percent from last month to 2,986 contracts.
  • Thirty-Day Fed Fund options rose 313.1 percent from last year and 62.1 percent from last month to 502,109 contracts.

Agricultural Futures and Options Highlights

  • Agricultural futures and options complex trade was up 11.4 percent from December 2004 at 5,737,421 contracts.
  • Wheat futures rose 52.4 percent from last month to 612,980 contracts.
  • Corn futures rose 25.5 percent from last month to 1,467,819 contracts.
  • Wheat options rose 94.2 percent from last month to 148,339 contracts.
  • Corn options rose 40 percent from last month to 372,195 contracts.
  • Soybean options rose 37.8 percent from last month to 439,211 contracts.
  • Soybean Meal options rose 51.8 percent from last month to 49,162 contracts.
  • Soybean Oil options rose 26.9 percent from last month to 40,850 contracts.

Precious Metal Futures

  • Precious Metals futures trade rose 75.7 percent from last year to 73,443 contracts.
  • Mini-sized Silver futures rose 31.8 percent from last year to 11,534 contracts.
  • Full-sized Gold futures rose 29 percent to 26,229 contracts since their launch in October 2004.
  • Full-sized Silver futures rose 44 percent to 4,732 contracts since their launch in October 2004.

Equity Complex Futures and Options

  • DJIASM futures and options complex trade was up 34 percent from last year and up 11 percent from last month at 2,231,709 contracts.
  • Mini-sized Dow ($5) futures rose 44.6 percent from last year and 17.4 percent from last month to 2,008,193 contracts.
  • Mini-sized Dow ($5) options rose 21.9 percent from last month to 67,250 contracts.
  • Mini-sized Dow ($5) options rose more than 85 percent since their launch in February 2004 to 67,250 contracts.

  • CBOT Full Membership last traded at $1,150,000 on January 31, 2004.
  • CBOT Associate Membership last traded at $385,000 on January 31, 2004.
  • CBOT COM membership last traded at $110,000 on January 24, 2004.
