CBOT Breaks Exchange Daily Volume And Open Interest Records

Date 15/08/2002

Chicago Board of Trade announced that its members traded more contracts on Wednesday, August 14, a total of 2,683,610, than on any other day in the exchange's 155-year history and also set a new open interest record of 8,096,607 contracts.

The 2,683,610 total of the CBOT's interest rate, equity and agricultural futures and futures-options contracts broke the former record of 2,639,714 set on February 25,1999, while the new open interest record of 8,096,607, shattered the former level of 7,852,064 contracts set the previous day on August 13, 2002.

Open interest represents the number of positions that have not yet been offset and closed out at the end of a trading day and the industry also considers it to be a barometer of a contract's liquidity and the ability to efficiently get in and out of the market.

The exchange's new daily volume record, combined with its new open interest record, is testimony to the superior quality and performance of CBOT® markets - the most liquid in the world. In addition, the Ten-Year Treasury note futures-options contracts set a new daily volumerecord at 333,754, breaking the former record of 329,161 contracts set on June 13, 2002.

Corn futures-options also set a new daily record of 92,699 contracts, surpassing the former record of 73,358 contracts set the previous day on August 13, 2002.
