CBOT Average Daily Volume Climbs 3.5 Percent In October And 15.8 Percent YTD - Exchange Open Interest Grows 6.4 Percent YOY And 11.7 Percent Over September

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT® ) announced today that Exchange-wide average daily volume climbed to a new high for October. Average Daily Volume (ADV) for October rose to 2,356,354 contracts, up 3.5 percent, compared to 2,277,655 contracts in October 2004. Total Exchange ADV Year-To-Date (YTD) increased by 15.8 percent to 2,727,162 contracts, up from 2,254,205 contracts reported in October 2004.

The CBOT experienced six monthly volume records in its product suite in October. A monthly volume record in Equity futures complex futures reached a high of 3,026,525 contracts, while the Equity futures and options complex increased to 3,079,335 contracts. Electronically traded volume records included the Metals complex, which climbed to 141,532 contracts, 5,000 oz. Silver futures grew to 10,161 contracts, CBOT Financial options complex rose to 795,624 contracts and $5 mini-sized Dow futures also increased to 2,892,889 contracts.

Total Exchange Open Interest at the end of October rose to 6.4 percent at 12,613,335 contracts compared to 11,858,809 contracts in October 2004. Open Interest is also up 11.7 percent from September at 11,296,894 contracts. Further, there were seven daily open interest records set in October. Fed Fund options rose to 1,175,224 contracts on October 31; Corn futures rose to 857,991 contracts on October 27; Wheat futures rose to 304,963 contracts on October 31; Precious Metals complex futures rose to 18,990 contracts on October 28; 100 oz. Gold futures rose to 9,003 contracts on October 28; 5,000 oz. Silver futures rose to 2,001 contracts on October 19; and Ethanol futures reached 461 contracts on October 31.

The CBOT also experienced an increase in electronic trading volume through its e-cbot platform. Overall, electronic volume YTD increased by 30.1 percent to 369,409,138 contracts from 284,033,012 contracts reported in 2004. Electronic volume now represents 67.2 percent of total electronic and open auction volume YTD compared to 60.0 percent in 2004. Approximately, 90 percent of total Agricultural futures orders traded in the Open Auction environment were routed electronically through the Exchange’s order routing system.

October Complex Highlights (ADV)

  • Agricultural futures and options complex ADV rose 6.5 percent from last year, 8.8 percent to 298,357 contracts from last month and 6.4 percent YTD to 368,087 contracts.
  • Financial futures and options complex ADV rose 17.4 percent YTD to 2,254,351 contracts.
  • Equity Index futures and options complex rose 36.7 percent from last year and 28.8 percent from last month to 146,635 contracts and increased 17.4 percent YTD to 111,465 contracts.
  • Precious Metals futures and options complex rose 66.3 percent from last year and 6.9 percent from last month to 6,740 contracts and increased 61.4 percent YTD to 3,948 contracts.

October Agricultural Futures and Options Highlights (ADV)

  • Wheat futures rose 49.9 percent from last year and 8.7 percent over last month to 34,163 contracts and increased 25.1 percent YTD 39,558 contracts.
  • Corn futures rose 1.9 percent from last year to 71,631 contracts and increased 14.4 percent YTD to 111,060 contracts.
  • Oat futures rose 6.4 percent from last year and 53.0 percent from last month to 1,290 contracts.
  • Soybean futures rose 7.9 percent from last year and 65.1 percent from last month to 84,045 contracts and increased 7.6 percent YTD to 81,569 contracts.
  • Mini Soybean futures rose 24.3 percent from last year and 76.9 percent from last month to 2,300 contracts and increased 35.0 percent YTD to 1,952 contracts.
  • Soybean Oil futures rose 9.8 percent from last year and 2.1 percent from last month to 28,907 contracts.
  • Rough Rice futures rose 71.6 percent from last year and 91.0 percent from last month to 1,301 contracts and up 30.7 percent YTD to 889 contracts.
  • Wheat options rose 5.4 percent to 5,734 contracts from last year and 27.9 percent YTD to 7,827 contracts.
  • Soybean options rose 5.4 percent to 21,424 contracts from last year and 11.9 percent YTD to 28,150 contracts.
  • Soybean Oil options rose 83.3 percent from last year and 44.0 percent from last month to 4,062 contracts.

October Financial Futures & Options Highlights (ADV)

  • US Treasury Bond futures rose 14.0 percent from last year to 322,519 contracts and increased by 23.6 percent YTD to 352,745 contracts.
  • Ten-Year Treasury Note futures rose 13.2 percent YTD to 867,342 contracts.
  • Five-Year Treasury Note futures rose 10.7 percent from last year to 425,527 contracts and increased 21.0 percent YTD to 492,303 contracts.
  • Two-Year Treasury Note futures rose 98.2 percent from last year to 67,204 contracts and increased 143.9 percent YTD to 81,735 contracts.
  • US Treasury Bond options rose 59.3 percent from last year and 37.8 percent from last month to 71,718 contracts and increased 14.5 percent YTD to 65,229 contracts.
  • Ten-Year Treasury Note options rose 22.8 percent from last month to 214,192 contracts and increased 2.8 percent YTD to 233,652 contracts.
  • Five-Year Treasury Note options rose 18.1 percent from last month to 60,129 contracts and 9.5 percent YTD to 77,691 contracts.
  • Thirty-Day Federal Funds options rose 45.2 percent YTD to 27,269 contracts.

October Equity Futures and Options Highlights (ADV)

  • Mini ($5) Dow Jones Industrial Index futures rose 51.3 percent from last year and 33.9 percent from last month to 137,757 contracts and increased 23.9 percent YTD to 101,248 contracts.
  • Mini ($5) Dow Jones Industrial Index options rose 33.9 percent last month to 2,108 and increased 17.1 percent YTD to 2,607 contracts.

October Precious Metal Futures Highlights (ADV)

  • Full-sized Gold futures (100 oz.) rose 202.1 percent from last year to 3,130 contracts and increased 76 percent to 1,823 contracts.
  • Mini-Silver futures rose 7.8 percent from last month to 787 contracts.
  • Mini-Gold futures rose 14.4 percent from last year and jumped 22.9 percent for the month to 2,339 contracts.
  • Full-sized Silver futures (5,000 oz.) rose 229.3 percent from last year and 52.2 percent from last month to 484 contracts and increased 91.8 percent YTD to 282 contracts.
